David Summer - Trumpeter
Current Performing Activities
As a performer, David Summer specializes in playing the Trumpet and Flute for church services and other ceremonial occasions. Over the past 3 decades, David has performed as a Trumpeter and Flutist for dozens of churches in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.
This unique instrumental doubling ability, flute and trumpet, is especially well suited to creating a wide range of tone colors that will enhance any special music church service.
David Summer, Flute in Church In addition to playing for church services, including Confirmation and First Communion ceremonies, church anniversaries, pastor installations and other special occasions, David also specializes in performing as a solo flutist for wedding ceremonies.
Solo flute music is perfect for smaller wedding ceremonies, outdoor ceremonies or simply as an intimate alternative to traditional church organ music. David has played the flute alone for wedding ceremonies in a wide variety of locations including private homes, ballrooms, hotels and garden settings.
Past Performing Activities
Although he now concentrates on solo performance work, for over 25 years, David played flute, trumpet, trombone and keyboards in a wide variety of musical ensembles.
In the classical realm, David has performed with brass quartets, brass quintets, flute ensembles and chamber orchestras. As a trumpet player, he led his own brass emsemble, which performed many of his own musical arrangements. David currently leverages his experience as a chamber music performer and arranger as director of the Early Music Ensemble at The Lawrence Academy in Groton, MA.
Jazz has always been a favorite performance medium for David. He's performed with several big bands, playing for summer concerts as well as for stylish, elegant functions. On many occasions David has played lead trumpet or second ("jazz") trumpet with big bands, performing at Faneuil Hall in Boston, MA and the Boston Esplanade among other venues. Among these big bands was the Roy Nutile Big Band, which is still playing great big band jazz music, now lead by Roy's son as the Tom Nutile Big Band.
David has also performed with several concert bands, including the Framingham MA Concert Band, where he played flute or trumpet depending on what instrumentation was needed for a particular performance. This band played summer concerts for many Massachusetts area towns. In the distant past, David played his trumpet or cornet for many parades in the Boston and Worcester areas.
David led his own jazz quintet and performed as one half of a flute and guitar duo playing classical and jazz music for corporate functions and other occasions. He's also performed in several bands backing vocalists including a 12-piece big band backing the famous 1960's vocalist Bobby Rydell for performances in Boston and Rhode Island.
Although not strictly performances per say, David has also enjoyed playing with many fine musicians in jam sessions.
