David Summer Performer, Trumpet Flute Soloist, Church Service Ceremony

Playing the Trumpet and Flute well in a church setting is a very specialized type of performance playing. David has decades of experience tailoring his trumpet and flute playing to any church setting.

Usually, David will begin the service with a flute prelude, setting a contemplative and welcoming tone. During the service, David will play along with the hymns as the congregation sings. For each hymn, he will select the appropriate instrument, trumpet or flute that will compliment the particular piece. David can also play along with the choir and congregation during sung responses and acclimations as well as during an Anthem, Offertory and Communion. The postlude is usually performed on the trumpet. For a postlude, David likes to perform an instrumental version of a joyful hymn, often with one of his own descants.

David plays for Confirmation and First Communion ceremonies as well as for church anniversaries, pastor installations and other special occasions. Often a church will have David return to perform, not to mark a special occasion, but simply as a beautiful addition to the music.

David is a classically trained musician. Over the years, he has been a flautist and/or trumpet player in many classical ensembles including brass ensembles, flute ensembles and chamber orchestras. However, David has also worked as a trumpeter and flutist in different types of jazz and pop ensembles as well, including big bands and concert bands and has lead his own jazz ensemble. This additional performance background gives David the ability to derive beautiful trumpet or flute parts, on the spot, as needed from keyboard parts or chord changes.

David takes pride in being able to blend into any church setting and his ability to work very well with organists, choir directors and church music directors. He works hard to ensure that the experience of performing with an additional musician is a pleasant and satisfying musical experience for everyone. David handles all the technical aspects of working with a trumpeter and flute player including handling all transpositions as well as deciding when and where it's appropriate to play during a piece with the choir and/or congregation.

David also specializes in playing the flute alone for wedding services.

The solo flute is perfect for smaller wedding ceremonies, outdoor ceremonies or simply as an intimate alternative to traditional organ music. A solo flutist sounds beautiful in a church, but is equally beautiful in many other settings. David has played the flute alone for wedding ceremonies located in private homes, ballrooms, hotels and garden settings.
